The United States has the highest teen pregnancy rate of all industralized nations with one out of three adolescent females becoming pregnant during her teenage years. The rates of pregnancies, births, and abortions are increasing. These rates are higher in rural communities. Socioeconomic levels as well as educational levels are lower in rural communities and rates of poverty are higher. Teen pregnancy is a large contributing factor.
Approximately one million adolscents become pregnant in the United States every year, with approximately 500,000 births occuring to school aged mothers (ages 11-19). Recent U.S. data has shown a decline in the proportion of teenage births over the last 10 years, but teenage childbirth rates in the U.S. still remain at least five times greater than that of other Western countries.
In 2010, a total of 367,752 infants were born to women aged 15-19. This is a drop of 9% from 2009. Birth rates fell 12% for women aged 15-17, and 9% for women aged 18-19 years.
